The Ultimate Storage Unit Prep Checklist

Rotating seasonal wardrobes, clearing out the garage, or freeing up a spare bedroom on the Halifax Peninsula? Sending extra belongings to a storage unit is the easiest way to reclaim your living space without parting with the things you love.

Because our damp Maritime climate requires a bit of strategic planning, we have put together a comprehensive preparation to-do list. Since our facility is entirely climate controlled, your items are already safely shielded from seasonal temperature swings and harsh humidity—but these packing and sorting steps will ensure they stay in pristine condition.

Phase 1: Planning and Sorting

Before you buy a single roll of packing tape, you need a clear strategy for the items leaving your home.

  • The Daily Use vs. Storage Audit: Walk through your living space and separate items you need immediate access to from those destined for storage. Excellent candidates for a unit include winter tyres, seasonal sports gear, holiday decorations, and secondary furniture.

  • Create a Master Inventory: Write down a definitive list of everything heading to the facility. Take quick photos of high-value items for your personal household records.

  • Map Out Your Workspace: Group your items by size. Knowing the dimensions of your largest pieces makes it incredibly easy to choose the perfect unit size so you only pay for the exact space you need.

Phase 2: Packing for Long-Term Preservation

Even inside a climate-controlled environment, proper packing techniques prevent dust accumulation and keep your goods organized.

  • Invest in Plastic Totes: Heavy-duty plastic bins with airtight lids provide a vastly superior shield against baseline dust and shifting compared to standard cardboard boxes.

  • Clean and Dry Everything Thoroughly: Never store items that carry residual moisture. Wipe down outdoor patio furniture, dry off sports equipment completely, and launder all clothing and blankets before packing them away.

  • Wrap Fragile Items Individually: Use bubble wrap or clean packing paper for electronics, mirrors, and glassware. Avoid standard newspaper, as the ink can degrade and bleed onto your valuables over time.

  • Protect Mattresses and Fabric: Use specialized plastic mattress bags and fabric covers to keep dust entirely off soft surfaces.

  • Label at Least Two Sides: Use a thick permanent marker to label the front and side of every container. List the room it belongs to or the specific contents so you never have to open five bins just to find one item.

Phase 3: Smart Loading Strategy

How you arrange your storage unit determines how effortless it will be to grab an item three months from now.

Item Type Placement Strategy Reason
Bulky Furniture & Heavy Totes Back of the unit and along the side walls Creates a solid structural foundation and keeps the center accessible.
Seasonal & High-Use Gear Right at the front of the unit (near the door) Allows you to quickly swap items out without a total digging operation.
Fragile Items & Light Boxes Stacked carefully on top of sturdier plastic bins Prevents crushing and keeps delicate pieces safely out of the way.
  • Leave an Access Aisle: Never pack your unit completely solid from back to front. Leave a narrow walking path down the middle so you can reach the back corners without a massive restructuring project.

  • Disassemble What You Can: Take the legs off tables and store headboards vertically. This significantly reduces the footprint of large furniture, leaving you with more open space.

Phase 4: Final Drop-Off Check

  • Secure a Premium Lock: Invest in a high-quality disc lock or heavy-duty padlock. Advanced perimeter security and gate systems are fantastic, but a strong personal lock is your ultimate peace of mind.

  • Keep Your Codes Handy: Save your facility gate access codes, unit number, and key locations safely in your phone so your drop-off trips are completely seamless.

  • Maximize the Height: Don’t just pack the floor space. Safely stack your stable containers upward to take full advantage of the vertical clearance in your unit.
