What Can (and Cannot) Be Stored in a Storage Unit?
Packing up a storage unit is a fantastic way to clear out the garage, handle a big move, or finally reclaim your extra bedroom. But before you start loading up the truck, it’s worth asking: can literally everything go in there?
While self-storage is incredibly handy, units aren’t a free-for-all. For safety, hygiene, and legal reasons, some items simply cannot join the move.
Here is a quick breakdown of what belongs in your unit at Storage Inn—and what should stay out.
These items violate lease agreements, create safety hazards, or invite pests to the facility.
Perishable Food: Fresh produce, opened pantry items, and pet food attract rodents and insects. Stick to sealed, non-perishable cans if you must, but it’s best to keep all food out.
Flammables & Hazardous Chemicals: Gasoline, propane tanks, paint thinner, fireworks, and harsh chemicals are strict no-goes in enclosed spaces. (Note: Lawnmowers and snowblowers are fine, but you must drain all fuel first!)
Living Things: Plants will rot without light, and pets or people are strictly prohibited by law. Storage units are for storing items, not living spaces.
Irreplaceable Personal Treasures: While legal, it’s best to keep priceless family heirlooms, original birth certificates, passports, and high-end jewellery in a home safe rather than a unit.
If it’s safe, dry, and non-hazardous, it’s generally good to go. Storage units are perfect for:
Furniture & Household Items: Couches, mattresses, tables, and rugs. (Pro tip: Wrap mattresses in plastic covers and use moving blankets for wood.)
Seasonal & Outdoor Gear: Bicycles, patio sets, kayaks, skis, and winter tyres. Swap them out as the weather changes to keep your garage clear.
Appliances & Electronics: TVs, washers, dryers, and mini-fridges. Just be sure appliances are completely drained, defrosted, and dry before storing.
Business Inventory & Office Storage: Archived files, event displays, and extra stock for local business owners.
